9% of the areas across the region have been fully recognised through Native Title

84% of the region has First Nation parties identified and recognised to lead the decisions relating to Aboriginal cultural heritage

15,630 ha (0.62%) of the region is covered by a fully completed archaeological survey

Cultural protection and management

20% of the region’s documented sites have Cultural Heritage Management Plans in place

Cultural Heritage Sites

8,575 Cultural Heritage Sites formally recorded in South East Queensland

Land owners and managers

Traditional Owners are now the largest non-government landholders in South East Queensland. The three largest sand islands in the world are being actively managed by Traditional Owner groups (two through joint management)

In recognition that First Nations peoples have an important and leading role in caring for Country, cultural resource management indicators have been developed to highlight where First Nations stewardship is being enabled.

*Numbers as provided by contributors to the stewardship pilot (for the period 2019/20 - 2023/24). These numbers will increase as more groups from across the region submit data to the stewardship initiative as the project grows in the coming years.
