  • Meeting with stakeholders twice annually.
  • Increase collaboration with and understanding of Traditional Landcare practices.
  • Build oversight and stakeholder understanding of works being done in the local catchments.
  • Identify opportunities in the Ramsar site.

What we did

QYAC volunteer works in the bushThe network provides important information and perspectives that help prioritise on-ground projects.

Building collaborative efforts between stakeholder organisations to improve coordinated management to facilitate the restoration of and reduction of threats to the ecological character of the Ramsar Wetland Moreton Bay Ramsar Wetland, and improve the recognition and involvement of Traditional Owners as custodians of the land and sea.

The Network is not a decision-making forum. Participants will provide information for the consideration of individuals or stakeholder organisations where appropriate.

Measuring success

As a result of this project, the following was achieved:

  • The network meets twice annually.
  • Identifying current and emerging issues and threats related to the site and actions that Network members can take to reduce the threats.
  • Identifying investment and management opportunities relating to the conservation of the site.
  • Enhancing the value the community places on the conservation of Moreton Bay by raising its profile amongst the broader community.
  • Providing information to the relevant Government Departments to help inform reporting requirements for the site.
  • Promoting and advocating for Traditional Owner involvement in site management and conservation.

Why this project is important

The management of the Moreton Bay Ramsar site is complex with multiple site managers including Queensland Government departments, numerous local governments, and Traditional Owners. Site managers are required to include Ramsar values and principles in management to maintain the ecological character of the site.

The creation and ongoing biannual meeting of the Moreton Bay Ramsar Stakeholder Network allows for the free and easy sharing of information and provides collaborative opportunities that benefit the Moreton Bay Ramsar Wetland.

A significant role of the group is to facilitate and encourage involvement in a shared vision for the management of the Ramsar site amongst existing land managers, relevant Local Governments and State Government departments, Traditional Owners, industry, and community.
