Natura Pacific has just released a beautifully shot and informative documentary and podcast on vital work to conserve Eastern Bristlebird.It is part of Natura Pacific’s Back from the Brink series which highlights the great works of Australian scientists in animal and plant conservation. The Eastern Bristlebird episode was released on 20 October, documenting the epic recovery program being undertaken for this little bird across three states. The episode captures the countless months and years of effort it has taken to stabilise the four distinct populations across South East Queensland and northern New South Wales.
A little about the Eastern Bristlebird
The Eastern Bristlebird is a shy cinnamon-coloured ground-dwelling bird that can be spotted in the South East Queensland and northern New South Wales regions. This small critter with stubby wings is a nationally recognised endangered species of passerine or perching bird.
With our previous droughts and raging wildfires, along with lightning-fast human development in South East Queensland and northern New South Wales, many of Australia’s grassy woodland birds are struggling to survive. In just 15 years, the Eastern Bristlebird has gone from 14 populations down to 3 populations in ever-shrinking numbers.
This small bird faces many threats from nature and us. These threats include cats and foxes, road collisions, inappropriate fire regimes on properties with large tussock grass fields, encroachment of woody shrubs in their habitats, clearing of tall grasses for livestock grazing, and many more.
