We've planted 33,000+ plants across SEQ this spring - And we're not done yet!
In a major boost for South East Queensland's environmental health, our Land Restoration team has completed an ambitious spring planting plan, with 33,184 native plants now taking root across 19 different sites throughout the region.
Working hand in hand with eight local contractors, we've carried out this extensive planting initiative to support multiple environmental conservation projects, from the upper catchments and inland waterways to Moreton Bay.
"It's incredible to see what our teams have achieved this spring," says Samille Loch-Wilkinson, our Land Restoration Team Lead. "And we're not stopping here – we're already gearing up to plant just as many, if not more, in autumn."
The plantings support various interconnected environmental objectives:
- Koala habitat restoration and wildlife corridor enhancement.
- Creek and waterway rehabilitation, riverbank stabilisation and erosion control.
- Moreton Bay marine ecosystem protection
- Drinking water quality improvement.
- Sediment and nutrient management.
- Riparian vegetation restoration.
The strategic placement of these plants will help reduce and combat erosion, filter pollutants from waterways, provide essential wildlife habitat and strengthen the overall resilience of SEQ's ecosystems. Native species have been selected to maximise environmental benefits while ensuring long-term sustainability.
"Native vegetation is the key to improving our natural environment, each planting site moves us in the right direction – for key species like koalas and lungfish or for improving the water quality of the Brisbane River and Moreton Bay”, says Mark Waud Healthy Land & Water’s Portfolio Manager. “Each project contributes to a healthier South East Queensland, it is amazing to work with so many private landholders, stakeholder and investors to deliver this work,” he adds.
This successful spring planting sets a strong foundation for our future restoration work, and we're already preparing for an equally ambitious autumn planting season.
Stay tuned for the next season update and numbers!
