Through landmark legislation passed through the Queensland Parliament last week, the Quandamooka People have had their traditional custodianship restored over 17,000 hectares of Protected Areas on Mulgumpin (Moreton Island).

The legislation that was passed will see 98% of Mulgumpin jointly managed by the Traditional Owners and Queensland Government and includes additional state lands being added to the National Park.

The recognised restoration of custodianship of Mulgumpin Island

This restoration of custodianship is an important milestone for the Quandamooka People and the restoration of Traditional Owner leadership in the management of the Region’s natural resources. Healthy Land & Water has proudly supported Traditional Owners to care for Country including supporting the Quandamooka People in their aspirations to realise this outcome.

On Mulgumpin, Healthy Land & Water is fortunate to be currently delivering a range of activities in collaboration with the Quandamooka People and the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPES). This includes working towards the eradication of wild pigs, developing fire management strategies to protect the Island’s townships, and recording the fire management practices and aspirations through the Quandamooka Jarlo (Fire) Project.
