This FREE 2-day training event, by WSUD expert Shaun Leinster from Design Flow, and supported by Jack Mullaly from Water by Design, will step attendees through the detailed design process for bioretention basins.

The training will be specifically tailored for designers (civil and landscape) and development assessment officers involved in the detailed design and approval of stormwater management strategies.

This is a two-day course that includes classroom training and a field day.

The first day will include presentations and discussions on:

  • Advanced skills in detailed bioretention design, building on conceptual design knowledge.
  • Practical, hands-on learning through group-based design exercises.
  • Developing understanding of detailed design requirements: sizing, levels, media specifications, underdrainage, outlets, liners, sediment management, planting, and maintenance access.
  • Real-world case studies to connect theory with practice.

Outcomes for attendees

  • A solid refresher on when and where bioretention is appropriate.
  • Knowledge of bioretention types and sizing rules of thumb across Queensland’s regions.
  • Practical skills in applying media specifications, level controls, drainage design, and sediment management.
  • Understanding of detailed design (civil, landscape, and specification requirements).
  • Exposure to case studies of real sites, from small streetscape systems to large-scale bioretention basins.
  • Collaborative learning through group sessions tackling detailed design challenges.
