Koalas on the move: Breeding season begins in SEQ
It’s breeding season for koalas, and that means our iconic furry friends are on the move across South East Queensland.
Between dusk and dawn, koalas are more likely to roam. They may cross roads, wander through backyards, or find themselves in unfamiliar and potentially dangerous situations as they search for a mate and venture away from their mothers.
With SEQ home to the highest koala population, now’s the time to stay alert and do your part to help protect these iconic animals.
How you can help
There are a few simple but important ways to support koalas during breeding season:
- Drive carefully at night, especially near bushland or known koala habitats.
- Train your dog to avoid wildlife and keep pets supervised when outside.
- Create safe exit routes in your yard, such as building escape paths and ensuring fences aren’t a trap.
If you come across an injured koala, call 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625) for assistance.
