The Queensland Fire and Biodiversity Consortium (QFBC) recently delivered its virtual Fire Science Seminar Series, showcasing the latest science and information on fire preparedness, fire ecology and fire management, with a focus on fire and climate and taking a close look at last season’s devastating bushfires.

Collective power of collective minds in brainstorming fire and land management

Over 500 attendees tuned in to watch presenters with diverse backgrounds and skillsets who shared their knowledge, provoking thoughts, and questions around fire and land management.

The QFBC was privileged to have Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) Commissioner Greg Leach giving the opening address at the first seminar.

Drawing on his extensive career with the Victorian Country Fire Authority and the Metropolitan Fire and Emergency Services Board, Commissioner Leach engaged attendees with his first-hand experience and understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing adaptive bushfire management and planning. With over 30 years’ experience in the emergency services sector, Commissioner Leach shared a wealth of knowledge and experience with attendees.

The “Facing Fire in a Changing Climate” seminar series started on 10 November and was delivered over three consecutive Tuesdays. The series showcased applied fire ecology and fire management projects, with a focus on climate change and fire climatology. This year, the team took a closer look at the impact of the 2019/20 fire season in Queensland, its significance and impacts upon our ecological values.
